AGU Fall Meeting session announcement: Ongoing Climate Change in the Polar Latitudes

Edward Hanna
Your attention is drawn to the following AGU session. Abstract submission is now open at

http://agu-fm11.abstractcentral.com/

and the deadline for submissions is 4 August 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT.

Session C39: Ongoing Climate Change in the Polar Latitudes as Motivation for a Proposed International Polar Decade

Convenors: Edward Hanna and Sebastian Mernild

Accelerated change has been observed in key cryospheric environmental parameters (e.g. sea-ice, terrestrial ice and snow cover, hydrological, permafrost and ecosystem changes) over the last 5-10 years. To what degree are these impacts of a warming climate and how significant is natural variability? Because polar climates often exhibit considerable interannual variability, calls have been made for an International Polar Decade to ensure adequate ongoing monitoring of key environmental parameters, as a timely and important follow up to the recent IPY. We aim to bring together a wide range of researchers to discuss this proposal in the light of key polar changes so far documented.

We look forward to seeing you in San Francisco,

Regards,
Edward Hanna and Sebastian Mernild

Confirmed invited presenters include Josefino C. Comiso, Larry Hinzman, James E. Overland and Eric Rignot

We welcome any abstract submissions relating to aspects of polar change, and look forward to seeing you in San Francisco.
