The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Open Science Conference topic is Climate Research in Service to Society.   Please consider submitting an abstract to session B11, Cryosphere and Climate, convened by Mark C. Serreze, Vladimir Kattsov and Mark Drinkwater by the extended abstract submission deadline of 15 May 2011.  The session description follows below:

CRYOSPHERE AND CLIMATE (Session B11):

The cryosphere, existing at all latitudes, represents the realm of frozen water in the form of snow, sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets and permafrost. While much attention has been paid to characterizing and understanding causes of recent change in the cryosphere, including reductions in Arctic sea ice extent, increased sea ice extent in Antarctica, the mass balance of the
Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, disintegration of large ice shelves, and warming and thawing of Arctic permafrost, the greater challenge that lies ahead is understanding the feedbacks between these changes and the rest of the climate system as well as projecting their impacts, both negative and positive, on ecosystems and society. This session encourages papers on:
characterizing variability and cryospheric change on relevant time and space scales; process studies to refine our understanding of climate feedbacks involving surface albedo, ice dynamics, atmospheric and oceanic circulation, and the carbon and hydrologic cycles; and model simulations assessing the role of the cryosphere as a driver of climate variability and change from
regional to global scales. Particular emphasis will be given to use of models and observations in evaluating of the societal consequences of these changes.

The extended abstract submission has a deadline of 15 May 2011. 


Session C40: The Changing Cryosphere and Its Role in the Climate System (conveners: C. Xiao, M. Holland, L. Hinzman)

Numerous aspects of the cryosphere have undergone significant change over the historical record. These include retreating mountain glaciers, dramatic reductions in Arctic sea ice, declining terrestrial snow cover, widespread thawing of permafrost and changes in the mass budget of large ice sheets. Climate models project that these changes will continue and likely accelerate in the near future. The climate effects of this cryospheric change are considerable. For example, the amplification of Arctic temperature change is associated with large-scale surface albedo change resulting from declines in snow and sea ice cover. Additionally, changes in extreme events will likely result from further cryospheric change. An important gap in our current understanding of cryospheric climate dynamics is the role of feedbacks in amplifying or attenuating change. The aim of this session is to discuss ongoing and projected changes in the cryosphere and their influence on the climate system. Papers discussing teleconnections of polar climate changes to mid- and low-latitudes are also welcome.
