Call for Abstracts - "Ice Sheet Interactions with the Ocean and Atmosphere" (session C30) - WCRP Open Science Conference (Denver, 24-28 Oct. 2011)

William Lipscomb

Dear colleagues,

The World Climate Research Program (WCRP) will hold an Open Science Conference on 24-28 October 2011 in Denver, Colorado, on the topic of Climate Research in Service to Society:
http://conference2011.wcrp-climate.org/index.html

Please consider submitting an abstract to Session C30: Ice Sheet Interactions with the Ocean and Atmosphere in Past, Present and Future Climate (details below) The extended abstract deadline is May 15.

Session C30: Ice Sheet Interactions with the Ocean and Atmosphere in Past, Present and Future Climate
(conveners: A. Abe-Ouchi, D. Holland, W. Lipscomb)

Earth’s climate system presently supports two great ice sheets, Greenland and Antarctica, and in the past has also supported the Laurentide and Eurasian Ice Sheets. Changes in the ice sheets, on a wide variety of time scales, are driven by the atmosphere and ocean. The mechanisms behind slow and fast changes are not fully understood, despite their considerable importance and practical implications such as sea level change. The ice sheets are subject to natural and forced variability, and the resulting changes have influences back onto the atmosphere and ocean through, for example, their dependence on albedo, topography, and freshwater fluxes. In this session we solicit posters that cover the broad science range of ice sheets and their interactions with other components of the climate system. Observational, theoretical, and modeling studies are welcome, including both process and large scale modeling studies.
