Debris Covered Glaciers at EGU 2013

Lindsey Nicholson
Dear colleagues,

While many people may be off to the AGU in the next few days, perhaps you can use some travel time to think about how you'd like to contribute to the EGU 2013 General Assembly session CR6.1 on Debris Covered Glaciers....

Support application deadline: 30 November 2012 (which is today)
Abstract submission deadline: 9 January 2012
EGU 2013 is in Vienna, 8-12 April 2013 (http://www.egu2013.eu/home.html)

Session description:

Debris-covered glaciers are a prominent feature in many glacierized mountain regions. The presence of a surface debris cover fundamentally alters the surface energy balance and consequently the mass balance of these glaciers, partially decoupling them from the climate system. This influences the way glaciers will develop under different climate scenarios and poses a challenge when inferring former climate conditions from geological records of such glaciers.

This session aims to draw together knowledge on all aspects of debris-covered glacier systems, and we invite contributions including, but not limited to, (i) origins and characteristics of supraglacial debris cover; (ii) measurements or modeling of energy balance of debris-covered ice; (iii) mass balance measurements or modeling of debris-covered glaciers; (iv) the impact of debris cover on glacier dynamics; (v) depositional records of debris-covered glaciers, reconstructions of former glaciers and climatic interpretations of the depositional record; (vi) hydrology of debris-covered glaciers and the development of associated glacier lake outburst flood hazards and (v) remote sensing and field techniques for measuring properties of debris covered glaciers.

Hope to see you in Vienna,

Lindsey Nicholson, Ben Brock, Christoph Mayer and Adina Racoviteanu
