At the Institute of Mountain Risk Engineering (IAN), Department of Civil Engineering and Natural

Hazards, BOKU - University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna a research position is

available funded by a FFG-research project

Duration: 1.2.2012 until 31.11.2014.

Position Description

A 34 month funded doctoral (PhD) position is available at the University of Natural Resources and

Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria to conduct research into the scientific development and testing of a

snow avalanche monitoring method. The research involves fieldwork at Lech am Arlberg, Vorarlberg,

Austria. Research activities will focus on either deploying a distributed fiber optic (laser) sensing

system or developing an algorithm for acoustic data, or both. The applicant will be expected to develop

his or her own research agenda within this field. The research requires a strong interest in snow and

avalanche science, field experience is desirable.

Qualifications

Applicants should have an outstanding undergraduate and master study record. They should have a

background in snow and avalanche science and physics (desirable), plus an interest in programming

in Matlab, C++ or equivalent scientific programming environments. Language skills in both German

and English are necessary. Ideally the candidate has previously worked with distributed fiber optic

sensing or post processing of acoustic data. Since working in potentially avalanche prone areas is

necessary, excellent skiing skills are required.

Funding

Ph.D. funding will be guaranteed at the rate currently set by the University, which is approximately €

24000 per year. This funding will be supplied for 34 months.
