EGU 2013; EOS4: Modern Climate Science Education and Communication

Klaus Grosfeld-2

Dear colleagues,

we would like to draw your attention to a session dedicated to

EOS4: Modern Climate Science Education and Communications

at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly, Vienna, Austria,  7 - 12  April 2013. (
http://www.egu2013.eu)

Conveners: Klaus Grosfeld (AWI), Annette Ladstätter-Weißenmayer (IUP, Univ. Bremen),
Christina Klose (MARUM, Univ. Bremen), Claudia Sprengel (AWI)

The observed climate change and its impact on the Earth system on global to regional scale is a driving question in the general field of Earth and Climate System Sciences. Consequently, today’s education in this field demands a highly interdisciplinary and partly inter-institutional approach. Adjusted education concepts are therefore essential for an excellent professional career in research and/or the commercial and public institutions. E.g. the integration of climate observations and climate modeling requires networks and collaborations of experts and specialists in order to better understand climate impacts over a broad range of timescales. Furthermore the involvement of social scientists is required for integrating the society’s behaviors.
This session addresses how we educate pupils and students (under-graduates and graduates) and communicate to the public, government agencies and science stakeholders in general about key issues related to Earth and climate system sciences to meet the society challenges ahead. We call in particular for contributions related to
(i) Education programs at universities that build on the connection of scientists from the field of climate system sciences. This addresses multi-sector, multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder and research-driven education.
(ii) The communication and organisation of education of climate change issues by scientists, engineers, the media, civil protection, government agencies, and a multitude other environmental agencies to the general public and among stakeholders.
We are specifically interested in university programmes and distance education courses on themes related to climate change, risk assessment, and for training in developing countries.

With best regards,

Klaus,
