The University of Washington (UW) seeks an energetic, entrepreneurial leader for the position of Executive Director, Applied Physics Laboratory. The UW is the nation’s leading public university in obtaining research funding and is regularly ranked among the top 15 universities worldwide. The Applied Physics Laboratory at the UW (APL-UW) is characterized by its world-class reputation, and strong academic and collaborative integration into the UW. The APL-UW is designated by the Department of Defense (DoD) as a US Navy University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), and pursues both applied and basic research (DoD and non-DoD sponsored) through competitive grants, proposals, and contract research primarily to government (national and state) and industry sources.
With a current annual research budget around $70M, the APL-UW is an international leader in marine- and acoustic-related, science and engineering research, with focus groups in Acoustics, Air-Sea Interactions and Remote Sensing, Electronic and Photonic Systems, Environmental and Informational Systems, Industrial and Medical Ultrasound, Ocean Engineering, Ocean Physics, and Polar Science. The APL-UW employs over 200 people, including independent Principal Investigators (approximately half of the organization, many with academic affiliations to other UW units), technical staff, postdoctoral scholars, students, and administrative personnel.
Through collaborative pooling of high-quality technical expertise, in-house engineering, and prototype manufacturing resources, the APL-UW is uniquely positioned to address complex and large-scale marine-related engineering projects, engage in remote and extensive field operations, and effectively transfer advanced technology to industry and government sectors. Although the APL-UW’s primary focus is research along with its spin-offs and applications, its personnel also directly support the academic mission of the UW by mentoring and sponsoring students, teaching courses, providing research expertise complementary to academic units, and sharing science and engaging with the public and K-12 education efforts.
The Executive Director of the APL-UW must oversee and manage these extensive and diverse resources, providing vision, leadership, strategic planning, and practical support to the multifaceted research directions and strategies of the APL-UW. The Executive Director requires experience and understanding of the grant/proposal-driven research environment, reflecting both large institutional- and individual PI-led research. Acting as the primary ambassador for the APL-UW, the Director should have the ability to enhance relationships with DoD (especially the US Navy) and other funding sources including other government agencies and industry, and develop and enrich synergies between the APL-UW and the wider UW campus. The Executive Director also serves as the Senior Intelligence Officer for the APL-UW, providing senior leadership to APL-UW’s security team on all matters related to the safeguarding of classified material, systems, and information.
For this position, the UW seeks proven excellence in management of sizeable institutions and related skills such as communication, commitment to innovation, and development of career advancement pathways for employees. The successful candidate should have a track record, vision, and strategy for fostering diversity, equality and inclusivity. Demonstrated experience of effective leadership and a record of achievement and commitment to scholarship and service are essential. A doctoral degree in an engineering or science discipline is also required.
