It is with great sadness that we inform you that Gunnar Østrem died yesterday, at the age of 97. Gunnar was a member of the IGS for 65 years and he was made an honorary member of the Society in 2001.
Gunnar was an extraordinary enthusiastic glaciologist. He built up the glacier office (brekontoret) at the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), Oslo, Norway, from 1962. He initiated glacier
mass balance investigations in Norway and Canada. He also worked as professor at Stockholm University, Sweden.
