Job opportunity (post-Doc 2 years - renewable 1 year) at Université libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) : « Unravelling NEEM basal ice secrets »
…This a new attempt for the available position at ULB…welcome!...
Prof. Jean-Louis Tison is opening a 2-years (renewable one year) Post-Doc position (funded by the FNRS - Belgian National Science Foundation) to work on the basal ice samples of the NEEM ice core at the Laboratoire de Glaciologie de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium).
The North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling Project - NEEM - is an international ice core research project that aimed at retrieving an ice core from North-West Greenland (camp position 77.45°N 51.06°W) reaching back through the previous interglacial, the Eemian.
The applicant will focus on the basal part of the NEEM ice core, investigating basal ice properties with a multidisciplinary approach (ice fabrics and texture, gas concentrations, gas stable isotopes signature, total gas content, ice chemistry, aso…). The aim is to address a series of questions, in collaboration with the other international laboratories involved in the NEEM basal ice Consortium, such as: Is there a paleoclimatic signal preserved in the NEEM basal ice? How does the basal ice rheology affect the ice sheet movement? What is the age of the basal ice sequence? How do the ice biogeochemical properties reflect life signatures in this “extreme environment”?
The work will be “bipolar” (semantically, not geographically). On the one hand, the applicant will act as the Coordinator for sample cutting and distribution across the NEEM basal ice Consortium. He will foster meetings and contacts between the various teams in order to guarantee the efficiency and the reliability of the multidisciplinary approach. On the other hand, he will be in charge of the specific measurements under the responsibility of the ULB Glaciology Laboratory: ice fabrics and texture (collaboration with French and German colleagues), gas composition, total gas content, gas stable isotopes (collaboration with US colleagues), gas chemistry (collaboration with US colleagues), sediments properties…See details on project and application forms at “link”.
Application deadline: October, 1 2012 (5 p.m.)
Starting date: October, 15 2012 - can be rediscussed
