Dear Colleagues,

Towards the end of 2017, the collections of the Antarctic Marine Geology Research Facility at Florida State University will move to a new facility at Oregon State University.  This move requires curation and packing of the core collection so it can be transported across country with minimum degradation.  Because of lack of staff and limitation in space, the facility is not able to accommodate both the preparation for the move and extensive sampling parties or requests.  We are also unable to accommodate requests for additional non-destructive data (e.g. multisensory core logger data or X-rays) on the collection. Therefore, this is a last call for sample requests to be filled this year.  The cores will be available for sampling again by February of 2018 at OSU.   Sample requests must be received by May 15th of 2017. Please email requests directly to [hidden email].

Sample request forms are available on arf.fsu.edu.  In addition to the typical information included in the sample request, we require clear indication of funding source and justification for why the samples are needed before February 2018. Funded science that will be immediately impacted by core unavailability will be given priority. The requests will be prioritized after the deadline by the AMGRF advisory committee, the OSU facility directors and the AMGRF acting director. Request priority will be based on immediacy of science need, funding for the project and the ability to perform the work at FSU without disruption to the move schedule. If a visit by a sampling party is needed, those requests, when granted, will be accommodated as-best-as-can realizing that we are planning an intensive packing schedule for summer 2017. Requesters will be notified of the status of their request by early June.  Sample requests approved for spring-summer 2017 that do not require a visit will be fulfilled as soon as possible during the months of June to August of 2017, as intensive packing proceeds. Deferred sample requests will be forwarded to the new management team at OSU for processing as soon as possible after the collection is received at the new facility.

It is ours and NSF’s priority that the successful transition of the repository to its new home is on schedule and that we satisfy sample requests with immediate need. NSF understands that this may cause a short period of inconvenience to PIs but that this is the short-term trade off as the facility transitions to a new management model and a state of the art facility.
