The CONVINCE project aims to study the dynamics of convective transport and instabilities of GHG in porous media and sea ice by combined field scale measurements, laboratory-scale experimental studies and theoretical modeling. Our goal is to provide fundamental understanding of how convective instabilities affect the efficiency of sequestration conditions and global exchanges of GHG with sea ice. To do so, we will combine complementary expertises in glaciology, sea ice systems, nonlinear dynamics, chemistry, hydrodynamics, physics and modeling to design synergetic laboratory scale experiments and numerical simulations devoted to enlighten the interpretation of field scale data.
The applicant will focus on the experimental part of the project in close cooperation with theoreticians in charge of the modeling. The goal will be to build a new experimental set-up devoted to study diffusive and convective transport processes in gas-liquid and gas-ice-liquid systems. In particular, the objective is to experimentally study the influence of convective hydrodynamic instabilities on the spatio-temporal dynamics of CO2 in sea ice and in underground saline aquifers.
The applicant must be a gifted experimentalist interested in developing the experimental part of the project in close collaboration with theoreticians who will take care of the modeling. He/She will be autonomous, “open-minded” and at ease in team work. While previous experience in either hydrodynamics, ice geology, or nonlinear physics is desirable, candidates with a strong experimental background in any relevant area of chemistry, physics, engineering or geology will be considered.
