One year Research Fellow in Glaciology, University of Southampton

Hart J.K.
Research Fellow

Investigating glacier stick-slip motion using a wireless sensor network

A Research Fellow is required to assist with work on a Leverhulme funded research project led by Prof Jane K. Hart (Geography) and Dr Kirk Martinez (Electronics and Computer Science). This project will be using the innovative Glacsweb wireless probes to understand glacial processes at Skalafellsjökull, Iceland (http://envisense.org/glacsweb/).

There are two research posts associated with this project, one based in Geography with particular emphasis on the dGPS and seismic systems; and another based in ECS specialising in the design, building, calibration and programming of the sensor network, and the design and maintenance of the database.

The Geography research fellow will need an interest in glaciology, arctic fieldwork, with a good mathematical ability, preferably with a knowledge of GIS, GPS, GPR and geophysics; and programming and model development.  You will need a degree in Geography, Earth Science or Physics, and a PhD in Glaciology, Geophysics, Earth Science or Geomorphology.

The post is available from 1st October 2012 for a period of 1 years. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Jane K. Hart ([hidden email]).

The closing date for applications is 21st Oct  2012 at 12.00 noon.
Full details and application forms are available at: https://jobs.soton.ac.uk/vacancies.aspx?cat=150&type=5

Best Wishes

Jane
