PhD-Position for research in the field of Atmosphere Physics
investigating Arctic Amplification processes is availabe at the Alfred
Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany
The Alfred Wegener Institute, Research Unit Potsdam, Section Physics of
the Atmosphere, invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position
(66% position, temporary for 3 years).
The PhD theme will be the analysis and interpretation of data from
ground based remote and in situ sensing instrumentation, which is in
continuous operation at the Arctic Research Base AWIPEV on Spitsbergen,
as well as campaign data from the PASCAL and ACLOUD campaigns performed
within the DFG funded Transregio Collaborative Research Centre 172:
Arctic Amplification: Climate relevant atmospheric and surface processes
and feedback mechanisms (AC3). The goal of the work is to quantify the
contribution of water vapour and aerosol content and variability to the
amplified Arctic climate change.
We seek an interested and motivated young researcher to work in a
multi-disciplinary team. The position requires a master or diploma
degree in physics, meteorology or a related field. Experience in
scientific programming with Matlab or equivalent software is
advantageous. Good English language skills are expected, as the
applicant is expected to discuss and disseminate results on national and
international meetings and conferences. The willingness to participate
in expeditions to the Polar Regions is required.
The position is limited to three years. The salary will be paid in
accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD
Bund) based on qualifications and transferred tasks, salary level 13
(66%). The place of employment will be Potsdam.
