PhD position GIS/remote sensing of landslides University of Auckland, NZ

Martin Brook

Please post to the list (not glacial, but may be attractive to a suitable geoscientist):

PhD Project: Delineation of landslide hazard and development of mitigation tools in a vulnerable city

We are searching for a candidate with strong GIS/remote sensing skills to undertake a fully funded 3-year PhD focused investigating landslide hazards in the Gisborne region of New Zealand’s North Island. Slopes in the area are underlain by weak upper Tertiary sediments, and are showing indications of reactivation in the vicinity of Gisborne city. The PhD student will utilise a combination of airborne remote sensing techniques, including Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and LiDAR, as well as field data acquisition including UAV/Structure-from-Motion, and in situ monitoring. The project is funded by the Earthquake Commission (EQC), a New Zealand Crown entity investing in natural disaster research, education and providing insurance to residential property owners, in collaboration with The University of Auckland, Gisborne District Council and GNS.

University of Auckland supervisors: Dr Martin Brook and Dr Jon Tunnicliffe

GNS supervisor: Dr Ian Hamling

Gisborne District Council supervisor: Dr Murry Cave

Funding: 3 year scholarship (NZ$27,000/year) + fees

Start date: as soon as possible

If you have strengths in GIS/remote sensing and geomorphology, enjoy fieldwork, and have a current and clean driver’s license, please send a cover letter, CV and academic transcript to Martin Brook: [hidden email]

Many thanks!

Martin
