PhD position in machine learning for ensemble prediction in weather and climate
There is a vacancy for a PhD position in machine learning for ensemble prediction in weather and climate. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years. I would greatly appreciated if you could post this information and/or inform potential candidates at your department about this opportunity.
About the project:
The PhD project focuses on research in machine learning, topological
data analysis and visualization techniques and the exploration of new
approaches to enhance weather and climate models. The state-of-the-art
approach to assessing predictability in weather and climate models is to
perform ensemble simulations and use mean, median, and standard
deviation to assess model performance and forecast certainty. The
presence of multimodality in the ensemble challenges existing methods
for ensemble data analysis.
The PhD candidate will study
machine learning and topological techniques to identify and visualise
multimodal development in weather and climate prediction systems.
Emphasis will be on weather systems, such as cyclones and fronts based
using novel diagnostic tools developed at UiB, to identify and describe
their multimodal evolution in different modelling systems.
