PhD student position in Arctic hydrology at UQTR

Kinnard, Christophe

The Department of Environmental Sciences at UQTR, Trois-Rivieres, Canada, is offering a funded PhD student position in Arctic hydrology

Application deadline: May 20th, 2017

Context:  Polar amplification of global warming is causing rapid ecosystem transformations in the Arctic. While the regional hydrological cycle should intensify due to projected increases in precipitation, the hydrological response of Arctic catchments to changing precipitations and temperatures could be strongly mediated by local surface feedbacks involving snow, vegetation and permafrost. While the main interaction processes between snow, vegetation and the ground thermal and moisture regime are known, their cumulative impact on the water balance of permafrost catchments in response to climate change remains difficult to predict. This information is important to project the evolution of Arctic ecosystems and their feedbacks on regional climate through changes in albedo and carbon fluxes. This PhD project will use a physically-based land surface model to assess the climate sensitivity of the snow cover and the soil thermal and moisture regime for a small research catchment on Bylot Island in the Canadian High Arctic. Controlled model experiments and sensitivity analyses will be used to address the following questions: (1) how could the snow cover evolve in response to varying temperature and precipitation scenarios? (2) How will snow cover changes impact the thermal and moisture regime of the permafrost active-layer? (3) How will the vegetation respond to changes in soil moisture regime? The candidate will take part in one field season to assist with ongoing monitoring of snow and active-layer conditions and to collect new validation data for the project. The PhD candidate will integrate the Centre for Northern Studies (www.cen.ulaval.ca), the Network of Centres of Excellence ArcticNet (www.arcticnet.ulaval.ca) and the RIVE Research Center at UQTR (www.uqtr.ca/rive).The project will begin in September 2017. A three-year scholarship of 21 000$CAN/year will be offered to the successful candidate.

Required qualifications: Candidates will hold, or be finishing, a Master’s degree in a discipline related to the project (Geography, Hydrology, Ecology). Experience in modeling of hydrological or other environmental systems, remote-sensing, GIS and scientific programming is highly desirable.

Application process: candidates interested in joining our research group are invited to inquire or apply by submitting a letter of motivation, a detailed CV including academic grades, and  the name and email of two referees to: Professor Christophe Kinnard at: [hidden email]
