Physical Oceanographer/Numerical modeller (m/f/d) Position at Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Bremerhaven

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

Physical Oceanographer / Numerical Modeller (m/f/d)

The section Physical Oceanography of the Polar Seas invites applications for the position of a Physical Oceanographer / Numerical Modeller (m/f/d) in the framework of the EU project Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate (SO-CHIC).

Rates of climate change on decadal and longer time scales depend on oceanic processes taking place in the Southern Ocean, but little is known about the process details. The advertised position aims at understanding the heat budget (including sensitivities) in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean. More specifically, you will develop regional budgets for dynamically different areas (inner Weddell Sea, Circumpolar Current, Maude Rise).

  • estimate the subsurface heat flux divergence including both advective and diffusive fluxes from Argo Float data and historical data. You will employ an ocean general circulation model with data assimilation employing the adjoint method to obtain estimates of regional heat budgets by simultaneously adjusting boundary conditions and internal parameters such as vertical and horizontal eddy mixing coefficients.
  • use the adjoint ocean general circulation model to explore the sensitivities of the system (Losch and Heimbach, 2007), in order to quantify and understand the interannual to decadal variations in the heat budgets including longer-term trends.

  • PhD degree in physical oceanography or related fields,
  • experience in data analysis and numerical modelling,
  • strong background in fluid dynamics and in high-level programming (preferably Fortran/Python)
  • good communication skills in English - both written and oral

Additional advantageous knowledge and skills

  • enjoy working in an interdisciplinary and international science community within SO-CHIC
  • ideally has proven his ability to publish scientific results as first author in peer-reviewed journals

For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Torsten Kanzow ([hidden email], +49(471)4831-2913) or Dr. Martin Losch ([hidden email], +49(471)4831-1872).

The position is limited to 3 years, the targeted starting date is 1st December 2019. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13.
The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
