Post Doc position in glaciology/remote sensing at IGE, Grenoble, FRANCE

Catherine Ritz-2

A post-doc position (one year) is available at Institut des Géosciences de l'Environnement (IGE) at the Grenoble-Alpes University (UGA) France

The post-doctoral fellow will carry out his/her mission within the ICE team of the IGE and will be placed under the responsibility of
Ghislain Picard's primary supervisor and Catherine Ritz's secondary supervisor.
This research mission will be carried out within the framework of the ESA 4D Antarctica contract (http://4d-antarctica.org/).
Its mission will be to develop an algorithm for estimating the internal temperature of the Antarctic ice cap in combining observations from the SMOS satellite and glaciological modelling by means of data assimilation. The activities will be as follows:

  • Study on the state of knowledge in the field concerned, methodological approaches and data available
  • Development of an emulator of the temperature field in ice from the outputs of a model existing physics. The envisaged approach is based on artificial intelligence tools but remains to be specified, evaluate and test.
  • Development of the data assimilation algorithm to estimate the internal temperature of the Antarctic Ice sheet from microwave space observations with estimation of associated uncertainties. The estimation will be done by a Bayesian approach using the developed emulator.
  • Valorisation of the work in the form of publications in international journals and presentations at conferences,  report writing and project monitoring for the European Space Agency's 4D Antarctica contract

Expected skills are geophysical (preferable glaciological) modelling and/or microwave remote sensing, adequate computer skills to implement a Bayesian approach and the development of an emulator,

Dead line for application is January 24th 2020, the preferred starting date is March/April 2020.

Details for application (resume + cover letter) are on https://www.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/post-doctorant/  Post-doctorant-e en géosciences
