PostDoc Position at University of Northumbria, Newcastle, UK, in ice/ocean interactions
Subject: Assessing the sensitivity of major East Antarctic outlet glaciers to recent and future changes in the ocean-climate system.
Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral research position in ice sheet modelling, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, NERC.
The successful candidate will be part of the multi-disciplinary research theme ‘Extreme Environments’ and will be based in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle,
UK. The project will focus on understanding the sensitivity of major East Antarctic outlet glaciers to recent and future climate change.
This work is a part of the NERC funded project (overall project PI: Professor Chris Stokes) `Assessing the sensitivity of major East Antarctic outlet glaciers to recent and future changes in the ocean-climate
system’. The candidate will work with Professor Hilmar Gudmundsson at Northumbria University, with Professor Adrian Jenkins at the British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, and with Professor Chris Stokes and Dr. Stewart Jamieson at Durham University.
The Research Fellow will use numerical modelling to understand and quantify the drivers of ongoing changes in ice flow and ice discharge of major East Antarctic outlet glaciers, and to predict their future
response to climate change. Numerical modelling will be used to understand the behaviour of both the ice sheet and the ocean and the interactions between these two components of the Earth system. The successful candidate will have a PhD in either physics or
mathematics, or in a related discipline such as glaciology, oceanography or geophysics. Experience in numerical modelling of either ice-flow or ocean circulation is desirable. The post will commence in March 2018.
For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Professor G. Hilmar Gudmundsson via Catherine Smurthwaite, on [hidden email].
As a part of the same project a further separate postdoctoral research position focusing on the use of remote sensing to understand recent dynamical changes will soon be available at Durham University under
the supervision of Professor Chris Stokes ([hidden email]) and Dr Stewart Jamieson.
