Description: Funding is available for a postdoctoral researcher with lab based expertise in chemistry and physics of the atmosphere/glaciers as part of the NSF’s funded project entitled “Impact of Atmospheric Trace Elements on the Third
Pole Glaciers”, a program for assessing the human impact on the chemical and physical characteristics of the glaciers in the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau from the pre-industrial era to present time (PI Paolo Gabrielli, co-PI Lonnie Thompson). Activities
will include, but not be limited, to analysis of trace elements in ice cores samples by ICP-SFMS, revaluation and interpretation of the data obtained. The researcher will be expected to assist in developing an ice core melting system for trace element analysis,
supervision of student assistants and to present results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The initial appointment will be for one year, with continuation for at least another year dependent on performance. Necessary funds
for conference travel will also be provided.
Requirements: PhD in relevant field (including, environmental, physical, chemical and geological sciences) with research experience in one or more of the following: glaciology, paleoclimatology, aerosol studies, geochemistry. Extensive
lab experience in preparation of environmental samples in clean room conditions and/or in analysis conducted by mass spectrometry constitutes a bonus.
