Post-Doctoral Position in
Earth System Modeling to Inform Decision Making
Department of Geosciences, Penn State University
A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Geosciences at
Penn State University.  The successful candidate will join an
interdisciplinary research team that analyzes two main questions: (i)
How can the paleo and instrumental records improve our mechanistic
understanding of the climate system and inform climate predictions? (ii)
How can this scientific information be used to improve the design of
climate risk management strategies? The ideal candidate would have a
strong background in fields such as Earth system modeling, mathematics,
or Bayesian statistics. Interests in decision making under uncertainty
and in collaborations with Earth scientists, economists, psychologists,
and philosophers would be further advantages.  The initial appointment
is for one year, with the possibility of continued support likely. The
position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. The
salary will be competitive, commensurate with experience, and will
comply with Penn State University guidelines.
To apply, please email a single pdf file containing a cover page, a CV,
reprints of two manuscripts, and the names and addresses of three
references to Klaus Keller ([hidden email]).
Penn State University is committed to affirmative action, equal
opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at Penn State
Interconnections of ethical, scientific, social,
and economic aspects of geoengineering proposals
A postdoctoral position examining the interconnections of ethical,
scientific, social, and economic aspects of geoengineering proposals is
available at Penn State University. The position is funded by the Penn
State Rock Ethics Institute. The project is co-led by Dr. Nancy Tuana,
DuPont/Class of 1949 Professor of Ethics and Dr. Klaus Keller, Associate
Professor of Geosciences. The applicant must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant
discipline (e.g., geosciences, philosophy, or economics) and have a
solid track record of interdisciplinary research. The successful
candidate will work in a vibrant group of natural and social scientists
and philosophers from the Penn State community and beyond (see, for
example the Rock Ethics Institute, http://rockethics.psu.edu, the Penn
State Center for Climate Risk Management, http://clima.psu.edu, and the
Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment,
http://www.psiee.psu.edu).
The review of applications will begin on January 10, 2011 and continue
until the position is filled. The ideal starting date is August 2011.
Salary and benefits are competitive. Applications are to be submitted
electronically to [hidden email]. Please send a cover letter
indicating your motivation and experience, a brief (2 page) description
of your research interests, your CV, a graduate transcript, and writing
samples (ideally one or more peer-reviewed publications). Please
arrange to have three confidential letters of recommendation sent to
[hidden email] or Search Committee. Rock Ethics Institute, 201
Willard Building, Penn State University,
University Park, PA 16802.
