The Laboratoire de Glaciologie of the Universté Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is currently seeking to fill a 4-years postdoctoral position in ice sheet

modelling and radar data analysis. The work is a part of a FNRS-FRFC research project entitled IDyRA, sponsored by the French Community of

Belgium and in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute (Tromsø, Norway).


IDyRA (Ice Dynamics derived from englacial Radar reflection Architecture) aims at improving our knowledge of the interaction between the ice sheet and the ice shelf (Antarctic grounding zones). It specifically aims at understanding the processes of subglacial melting and basal sliding by combining englacial information obtained from radio-echo sounding surveys with state-of-the-art higher-order ice sheet models. More specifically, IDyRA will improve the understanding of the role of buttressing in east Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, where the marine ice sheet is buttressed by numerous ice rises. Results of the project will contribute to a quantitative interpretation of melting under the ice shelf, its effect on ice sheet behaviour and the effect of a thermohaline circulation under the ice shelf. Furthermore, the stability of ice rises will be investigated through an analysis of the so-called Raymond effect. Most radar data have been collected (or are in the process of collection) within the framework of existing research projects, such as BELISSIMA (Belgian Ice Sheet – Shelf Ice Measurements in Antarctica) and through EUFAR (European Facility for Airborne Research).


The successful candidate will contribute to the development/application of thermomechanically coupled higher-order models which solve various

approximations of the Stokes system and use them to simulate englacial radar reflectors (isochrones).  Depending on the previous experiences of the

successful candidate, it is also expected to contribute analysis of the radar data, developing new analytical algorithms to precisely estimate englacial radar attenuation and bed reflectivity (using modelled temperature fields).  It is one of our ultimate goals to interpret both englacial reflector patterns and radar returned power from within and beneath the ice using the suite of these new tools.  It is also possible to be involved in a future ground-based field campaign in Antarctica. This work will be done in close collaboration with Dr. Kenny Matsuoka of the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø.

The desired qualifications are a PhD in glaciology, geophysics, or an equivalent geoscience, with good programming skills in a C and Matlab environment. The position is for a maximum period of 4 years and will start as soon as possible.
