The UK Met Office has a 3-year fixed term position for a scientist/senior scientist within the SEDNA (Safe maritime operations under
extreme conditions: the Arctic case) EU project. SEDNA is a 3-year Arctic project (2017-2020) funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme.
SEDNA will develop an innovative and integrated risk-based approach to safe Arctic navigation, ship design and operation, to enable European
maritime interests to confidently fully embrace the Arctic’s significant and growing shipping opportunities, while safeguarding its natural environment.
To achieve this, the Met Office contribution will build upon our existing capabilities in Arctic weather and sea ice short-range to seasonal
The role focuses on the development of the Forecast Ocean Assimilation Model (FOAM). The main task is to include the data assimilation
of sea ice thickness within the model. FOAM is an operational ocean analysis and forecast system run daily at the Met Office. FOAM provides modelling capability in both deep ocean and coastal shelf sea regimes using the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling
of the Ocean) ocean model and the Los Alamos CICE sea ice model. Satellite and in situ observations of temperature, salinity, sea level and sea ice concentration are assimilated into FOAM using the NEMOVAR system developed specifically
for NEMO. However, no assimilation of sea ice thickness is yet operational and it is thus the main objective of the project to implement and improve this component. To achieve this, the role will also involve some validation activities using available in-situ
sea ice observations.
