The loss of Roger Barry

Florence Fetterer
On March 19 the cryospheric community lost Roger Barry.  Roger was a University of Colorado Distinguished Professor and founding director of the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences.  Under his leadership, NSIDC grew to be a cryospheric data resource for the world.  He enjoyed building collaborative projects and international partnerships, and through his outreach many of us had opportunities to work with colleagues around the world.  Although he retired in 2008, he kept a cluttered desk surrounded by stuffed bookshelves in a room with students at NSIDC, coming in frequently, enjoying the work that was his life.  We will miss him.
