UKESM/CPOM Senior Research Associate in Climate Modelling, University of Bristol
The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), Bristol wish to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work on the coupling of the BISICLES ice sheet model with the UK Earth System Model (UKESM). This position is part of a joint Natural
Environment Research Council and Met Office initiative to develop and apply the UK’s next-generation climate model.
The project focusses on building fully interactive, dynamic Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets into UKESM, which will involve close collaboration with core team members at the Met Office, British Antarctic Survey and University of Reading.
The ice-sheet enabled UKESM will take part inter-comparison exercises convened as part of CMIP6, in particular the ISMIP6 project. The position is part of the CPOM Centre of Excellence which brings together researchers at Universities of Leeds, Reading and
Bristol and at University College London to use Earth Observation and modelling to understand change in Earth’s Polar latitudes.
You will have a Ph.D. in the numerical modelling of environmental systems. We seek individuals with extensive experience in the development of large-scale computer models, and advanced skills in C++ and/or fortran programming. Previous
experience in the development of global climate and/or ice sheet models would also be highly beneficial.
The initial contract will ideally start 1 April 2018 and initially run to 31 March 2019, however it is likely to be extended to March 2021 dependent on an extension of CPOM.
