Vacancy: 3-years PhD position at University of Innsbruck, Austria

Fabien Maussion
Dear Cryolisters,

please forward the following job description to anyone interested:

---

The Doctoral Program “Mountain Climate and Environment” at the University of Innsbruck invites applications for the following academic position:

PhD Candidate (3 Years)
Salary: € 2.048 brutto per month (14 times, as stipulated by collective agreement). This salary can be higher if you have worked in a similar position before.
Reference number: GEO-9601 (https://lfuonline.uibk.ac.at/public/karriereportal.details?asg_id_in=9601)

The successful candidate will work in both the Institute of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences (ACINN, http://acinn.uibk.ac.at/) and the Institute of Geography (https://www.uibk.ac.at/geographie/) in the project “Modelling of glacier length changes in the Alps on the base of tree-ring based temperature reconstructions for the last 2500 years”, funded by the University of Innsbruck and the recently created Doctoral Program “Mountain Climate and Environment” (DP-MCE). The project is conducted by the principal investigators Kurt Nicolussi (Alpine Tree-Ring Research Group, Geography) and Fabien Maussion (Ice and Climate Research Group, ACINN).

In this project, we aim for closing the gaps of glacial moraine records by modelling the length and volume variability of selected Alpine glaciers for the last ca. 2500 years by utilizing tree-ring based paleoclimate reconstructions. The modelling work will be conducted with the Open Global Glacier Model (http://oggm.org), and the tree-ring reconstructions will be realized at the Geography dendro-lab at Innsbruck university.

We are seeking for an enthusiastic candidate with an open and interdisciplinary mind, and a specialization in one of the two following disciplines:
- glaciological modelling (glacier dynamics, surface mass-balance, etc.), in which case you will have demonstrated experience in glaciology, atmospheric sciences, or a related field of Earth sciences
- tree-ring based climate reconstruction, in which case you will have demonstrated experience with dendrochronological laboratory work and/or paleoclimate reconstructions.

To apply successfully, you will:
- have a Master of Science in a field of Earth science with mathematical/physical background, or a Master of Science in physics/mathematics/informatics with previous experience in Earth science;
- have demonstrated skills in scientific programming and/or laboratory work;
- be fluent in English.

It will be advantageous if you can demonstrate:
- experience in any or multiple of the specific research areas of the research groups mentioned above;
- working experience in a supercomputing or in a laboratory environment;
- ability to work in a team;
- proficiency in German.

In addition to your PhD project you will play a coordinating role in the Doctoral Program “Mountain Climate and Environment” and have small administrative duties.

Please submit your application, letter of motivation, CV (with copies of certificates), and contact details of two referees (e.g. your thesis advisor or a former professor) until 18.11.2017 by email to:

Fabien Maussion ([hidden email]) and Kurt Nicolussi ([hidden email]). Please include the reference number GEO-9601 in the subject.

Best,

Fabien
