Vacancy: PhD student opportunity in meteorology/climatology at TU Berlin, Germany

Dieter Scherer
Dear colleagues,

the Chair of Climatology at the Technische Universität Berlin (Berlin
Institute of Technology) is seeking for a highly motivated Ph.D. student
interested in studying atmosphere-hydrosphere-cryosphere interactions on the
Tibetan Plateau within a new research project entitled "Variability and
Trends in Water Balance Components of Benchmark Drainage Basins on the
Tibetan Plateau (WET)", which is expected to start on May 1, 2011 for an
initial period of three years. The WET project will be funded by the German
Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the research
programme "WTZ Central Asia - Monsoon dynamics and geo-ecosystems". Formal
approval of funding is pending, but will most probably occur in April 2011.

Responsibilities:
The Ph.D. student will elaborate her/his dissertation within the WET
research project. The focus of the research activities will be in numerical
modelling of meso-scale atmospheric processes using the community model WRF.
We are using a novel approach for continuous generation of a re-analysed
atmospheric data set of high spatial (up to 2 km) and temporal (down to 1 h)
resolution for the whole Tibetan Plateau and adjacent high-mountain ranges
starting from 2000. Model results will have to be validated against
observations (especially from space-borne remote sensing systems), and will
then be used for hydrological and glaciological modelling carried out by the
project partners. The WET project is closely linked to a further research
project entitled "Dynamic Response of Glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau to
Climate Change (DynRG TiP)" part of the Priority Programme 1372 "Tibetan
Plateau - Formation, Climate, Ecosystems (TiP)" funded by the DFG
(<http://www.klima.tu-berlin.de/index.php?show=forschung_asien_tibet&lan=en>
).

Who can apply:
The candidate must have completed her/his graduation in physical geography,
meteorology, atmospheric or environmental sciences (or an equivalent
scientific discipline) at the time the position starts, and has to fulfil
the formal requirements of being accepted as Ph.D. student by the Technische
Universität Berlin. She/he must have good knowledge in meteorology,
climatology or atmospheric sciences, and must be able and willing to work in
an interdisciplinary team cooperating with a large number of German and
Chinese project partners. We expect profound interest in numerical
atmospheric modelling (experience with the WRF model is highly welcomed but
not a must). Interest in scientific programming using programming languages
like FORTRAN, C or IDL in Windows/Linux environments will be essential, as
well as good oral and written communication skills in English (German would
be a plus). The candidate is required being able to participate in field
campaigns in the study region on the Tibetan Plateau, which includes areas
up to 6'000 m above sea level.

Further information:
The position is, depending on formal approval, available from May 1, 2011,
for a period of three years according to a civil service position (TV-L
Berliner Hochschulen, 50%). Applications should be sent to Dieter Scherer by
e-mail ([hidden email]) no later than April 15, 2011 (later
applications may be considered as long as the position is open).

The university seeks to increase the number of female scientists and
encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications
receive preferential status.

Many thanks and best regards for distributing this advertisement
