In celebration of Sea Ice Month (http://www.apecs.is/research-fields/cryosphere/sea-ice), the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) will hold a Sea Ice Virtual Poster Session on Thursday, 22 September 2011 at 20 GMT (8:00pm). The one-hour session will feature presentations from:

-Stephen Ackley, Research Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio.  Professor Ackley has been the co-chairman of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) program on Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate (ASPeCt) ) and chaired the Science Steering Group for the Autosub-Under-Ice program which developed and used an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to make the first AUV trips under sea ice in the Arctic and the Fimbul Ice Shelf in the Antarctic.  He was awarded the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Service Medal for service in Antarctica. Ackley Point was named in Antarctica in honor of his outstanding sea ice research in Antarctica by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

-Rolf Gradinger, Associate Professor at the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the University of Fairbanks, Alaska.  Dr. Gradinger's work is centered on the dynamics of microbial communities in polar seas with most of his recent work focusing on the structuring role of sea ice for biological processes in Arctic waters.  Dr. Gradinger is also on the editorial board of Polar Biology as well as the International Arctic Scientific Committee (IASC)

In addition to these keynote presentations, there will be short poster
introduction from APECS members:

-Steve Reeves, Microwave Earth Remote Sensing Group (MERS) at Brigham Young University whose presentation is titled "Sea Ice Detection with ASCAT."
