Do you want to work with Greenlandic climate data and contribute to local and international knowledge of the polar climate system?
Asiaq is a company owned by the Government of Greenland. With a total of 28 interdisciplinary and international employees, we are responsible for monitoring the non-living environment in Greenland and play a significant role as Greenland's center for data, knowledge and skills regarding the physical environment. Our tasks range from research, consulting and commercial activities, to survey and advice to public authorities. The position as climatologist is affiliated with the Hydrology, Climate and Environment Department, which works with collection and dissemination of climate, hydrology and environmental data, and is responsible for a network of automatic weather stations in Greenland. The department includes technicians, academics and researchers.
As a climatologist you will play an important role in ensuring and documenting the high quality of climate data we provide. You will be fully involved in all aspects of the work, from data collection in the field, to documentation and quality assurance, through to analysis and dissemination to our customers, research projects and the public in Greenland. You will help develop and expand our weather and climate observation projects in close collaboration with colleagues in Asiaq, as well as external partners. The job is based in Nuuk, the Capital of Greenland, but during summer the job could include field work all around Greenland.
You have a relevant higher education e.g. engineering, geography or geophysics and have knowledge of meteorology and climatology, preferably under arctic conditions. You have experience with field measurement of climate parameters as well as data management and analysis. It is also an advantage if you have experience with databases, systematic quality assurance, statistical analyzes and GIS.
You are resourceful, ready to tackle problems that are new to you and are excited about the prospect of living in Greenland. Your spoken and written English is excellent. Knowledge of Danish language is an advantage. You can work as part of a team but also make independent decisions. You are in good health and are ready to stay in a tent in the wilderness in connection with field work.
Employment terms and conditions
Employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant union. Workplace is in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital with its thriving multi-ethnic community and its endless outdoor opportunities in the backyard. Staff accommodation will be assigned in accordance with applicable rules. Relocation and travel costs will be paid for the employee, accompanying partner and children at the time of taking up employment, as well as when leaving after at least three years of employment. If an applicant already has staff housing through employment in the Government, the right to assigned staff residence is retained. The staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated upon termination of the employment relationship. Start date 1st of October 2018 or by agreement.
